When we embody trees, we embody queerness in all of its forms. We embody care and community. And we embody home. This is part 7 in a new series about something very real for so many trans and gender expansive folx: Waiting for gender affirming care. Access the entire series on my website. In my last newsletter, I wrote about how nature can be a supportive place for us to find emobdiment and holding on days when we can’t be in our own bodies. This week’s T4T meditation is a guided practice in which you connect to and embody a tree. A quick note about trees, nature, and queer ecology:
Nature is inherently queer. It’s full of gender diversity. Nature’s queerness is an essential part of sustainable biodiversity. It’s also a perfect place to find a sense of home and anchoring when we are struggling to find it in our own bodies or in our community. Trees, in particular, encompass gender expansiveness: Many trees lie outside the gender binary, and some trees, like Yew trees, embody intersexuality. Oak trees contain male and female flowers. Red maples produce male and female flowers, and vary which ones they produce depending on the year. Trees also engage in mutual aid, sharing nutrients and engaging in community care through root systems and mycelial networks. When we embody trees, we embody queerness in all of its forms. We embody care and community. And we embody home.
